Lewis was President of the Lewis Publishing Company and the People's United States Bank, and was also founder of the American Woman's League and the American Woman's Republic. He founded University City, Missouri and served as mayor from 1906 to 1913. He signed this portrait with his motto, "Keep your face to the sunshine and you will not see the shadows. E. G.
