DescriptionOn June 19, 1910, Miss Julia Hoerner launched this gas balloon with Captain John Berry from an area that had been designated as the Missouri Aero Club Grounds, just west of the Woman's National Daily Building . This photograph was taken as the balloon headed west over Delmar Boulevard. According to the newspaper story that appeared with this photograph in "The Woman's National Daily" on June 21, 1910, they took off just before a storm and ascended to 1,500 feet. They landed 10 miles west after a harrowing flight. The newspaper article reported that Miss Hoerner was the first St. Louis woman to pilot a gas balloon on a pleasure flight.
