DescriptionUntil about 1910, much of Washington Avenue in University City was still dirt road. In this photograph, curbs and sidewalks have been constructed on the north and south sides of Washington, west of Pennsylvania (now Big Bend), and trees have been planted, but the street itself remains to be graded and paved. The Jackson Johnson mansion, carriage house and stable are on the left. Johnson was one of University City's first aldermen.
