DescriptionThe Alton, Illinois Chapter of the American Woman's League qualified for this Class III arts and crafts style Chapter House built for them by the League on a lot in the Christian Hill area of Alton provided by the Chapter. Chapter officers were President, Mrs. Angie Schweppe; First Vice President, Mrs. Angie Pilkington; Second Vice President, Mrs. Louisa Williams; Treasurer, Miss Julia Buckmaster; and Secretary, Miss Lillian Schneider. The Chapter reported a membership of 107. While construction was started in 1910, the Chapter House was not completed until November 1911. Financial difficulties of the League caused a shortage of funds, but construction was finally completed by the Alton Chapter.
